How to Improve Your CRS Score in 2026: 9 Ways That Work Under the Current Rules
Nine ways to raise your Express Entry CRS score in 2026, with point values from IRCC's grid: language retakes, French, education, spouse factors, PNP and more.

The most reliable ways to raise your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in 2026 are: better language test results, French, more Canadian work experience, a higher or additional credential, stronger spouse factors, and a provincial nomination. Job offers stopped earning points on March 25, 2025, so that route is gone. Point values below come from IRCC’s CRS criteria and are for a single applicant unless we say otherwise.
Key points
- Language affects core points and skill transferability. Going from CLB 8 to CLB 9 in all four abilities can add 44 to 69 points in total.
- French at NCLC 7+ can add up to 74 points and opens French-category rounds, the largest category in 2026.
- A provincial nomination adds 600 points.
- Job offers, LMIAs and “arranged employment” add zero CRS points under the current rules.
- No one can buy you points. Every claim must match your documents.
1. Retake your English test and aim for CLB 9
Language points are counted per ability. At CLB 9 you also unlock the higher transferability rows.
| Change (single applicant) | Points gained |
|---|---|
| CLB 8 → CLB 9 in all four abilities (core) | +32 |
| Bachelor’s degree + language transferability (13 → 25) | +12 |
| 3+ years foreign work + language transferability (25 → 50) | +25 |
| CLB 9 → CLB 10 in all four abilities (core) | +12 |
So a single candidate with a bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of foreign work who moves from CLB 8 to CLB 9 in every ability gains 32 + 12 + 25 = 69 points. That assumes the education and foreign-work groups were not already at their 50-point caps.
Approved English tests are CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted, and results must be less than two years old (IRCC language testing).
2. Learn French to NCLC 7
French helps in two ways:
- Additional points: 50 if you reach NCLC 7+ in all four French abilities and have CLB 5+ in English. It is 25 if your English is CLB 4 or lower.
- Second-language points: 3 per ability at NCLC 7–8, or 6 at NCLC 9+, up to 24 (single).
That is up to 74 points. More importantly, French-category rounds invited 50,500 candidates between January and October 1, 2026, at cutoffs of 382 to 420 (IRCC rounds data). Accepted tests are TEF Canada and TCF Canada.
3. Gain more Canadian work experience
| Canadian skilled work (single) | Core points |
|---|---|
| 1 year | 40 |
| 2 years | 53 |
| 3 years | 64 |
A second year also moves education plus Canadian work transferability from 13 to 25 (or 25 to 50 with a master’s or two credentials), and foreign work plus Canadian work from the 1-year row to the 2-year row. Only paid, authorized, skilled work counts. Work while studying full time does not. See our CEC guide.
4. Add or upgrade a credential
| Education (single) | Core points |
|---|---|
| Bachelor’s | 120 |
| Two or more credentials, one 3+ years | 128 |
| Master’s | 135 |
| PhD | 150 |
A master’s degree or a second credential also moves you to the higher transferability row. With CLB 9, education plus language goes from 25 to 50. Before you enrol, compare the cost and time with other options. A one-year program in Canada adds 15 Canadian-study points, and a three-year program adds 30.
5. Get every credential assessed
If you have two foreign credentials but only had one assessed, you may be missing the “two or more credentials” points. You need an Educational Credential Assessment for each foreign credential you claim. Make sure the ECA result matches the level you enter.
6. Improve your spouse’s factors, or switch principal applicant
If your spouse or partner is coming with you, they can earn up to 40 points:
| Spouse factor | Max points |
|---|---|
| Language (5 per ability at CLB 9+) | 20 |
| Education | 10 |
| Canadian work experience | 10 |
A spouse who goes from no test to CLB 9 can add up to 20 points. Also compare scores with your spouse as the principal applicant. If they are younger, have stronger language results or have more Canadian experience, they may score higher. Each profile must be truthful about the family.
7. Get a provincial nomination
An enhanced provincial nomination adds 600 points, which in practice means an invitation in the next PNP round. Provinces choose based on their own needs: occupation, location, job offer, ties to the province, or French ability. A job offer may matter to a province even though it no longer matters to the CRS. Start with our Provincial Nominee Program guide.
8. Claim Canadian study points
| Canadian post-secondary credential | Additional points |
|---|---|
| 1–2 year program | 15 |
| 3+ year program | 30 |
If you studied in Canada, make sure these points appear in your profile.
9. Claim a sibling in Canada
If you or your accompanying spouse have a brother or sister in Canada who is 18 or older and a citizen or permanent resident, you get 15 points. You will need proof of the relationship and their status.
Bonus: qualify for a category
Category rounds rank only eligible candidates, so a lower score can be enough. Healthcare and trades rounds closed between 467 and 477 in 2026. You need 12 months of experience in a listed occupation within the past three years. See Express Entry categories 2026.
Comparing the options
| Lever | Typical gain (single) | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| English retake to CLB 9 | +44 to +69 | Test fee and preparation time |
| French to NCLC 7 | Up to +74, plus French-category rounds | Months to years of study, depending on your level |
| Extra year of Canadian work | +13 core, plus transferability | Time, and valid work authorization |
| Master’s or second credential | +8 to +15 core, up to +25 transferability | Tuition and one or more years |
| Spouse language test | Up to +20 | Your spouse’s test fee and preparation |
| Provincial nomination | +600 | Meeting a province’s stream rules and being selected |
| Canadian study | +15 or +30 | A Canadian program of 1+ years |
| Sibling in Canada | +15 | Only if it applies to you |
The gains are estimates from IRCC’s grid for single applicants. Some depend on caps. For example, transferability points stop at 50 per group and 100 in total, so your real gain may be smaller if you are already near a cap. Recalculate with your own numbers before spending money on any option.
Myths to ignore
- “Get an LMIA job offer for 50 points.” Those points were removed on March 25, 2025.
- “Your score will rise if you wait in the pool.” Waiting does not add points. If you are over 29, each birthday costs you age points.
- “An agent can guarantee an invitation.” No one controls draw cutoffs, and misrepresentation can lead to a refusal and a five-year ban.
- “Job-offer points are coming back.” IRCC consulted in 2026 on bringing back points for high-wage occupations only. That is a proposal, and no decision had been announced as of October 2026.
What to do next
- Calculate your current score with our CRS explainer.
- List which of the nine levers apply to you and roughly what each would cost in time and money.
- Start with the fastest one (usually a language retake), then work on longer options like French or a provincial stream.
- Compare your target score with recent cutoffs on IRCC’s rounds page, and see the Canada hub for other routes.
If you are unsure whether a credential, job or relationship qualifies for points, a licensed RCIC or Canadian immigration lawyer can check before you claim it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to raise my CRS score?
For many candidates, a better language test result is the quickest change, because it raises core points and skill transferability points at the same time. A provincial nomination adds the most points (600), but it depends on a province selecting you.
Does getting a job offer or LMIA increase my CRS score?
Not since March 25, 2025. IRCC removed CRS points for job offers. A job offer can still matter for eligibility in some programs and provincial streams.
How many points does French add?
NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities, with CLB 5 or higher in English, adds 50 additional points, plus up to 24 second-language points for a single applicant. It also qualifies you for French-category rounds, which had cutoffs of 382 to 420 in 2026.
Can my spouse be the principal applicant instead?
Yes. Either spouse can be the principal applicant if they meet the program requirements. Couples often compare both scores before deciding, but the information in each profile must be accurate.
