What happened

Ontario updated the scoring for its new Ontario Workforce Priority stream. According to the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) updates page, the change was made on October 5, 2026 and announced on October 7, 2026.

Under the “Canadian work experience: earnings history” factor in the expression of interest (EOI) system, registrants who earned $80,000 or more in a single year within the past 5 years now receive 10 points. Earnings are verified with a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Notice of Assessment. Ontario said the change was applied automatically to all existing EOIs, so registrants do not need to log in or update their profiles.

Who is affected

People in, or planning to join, the Ontario Workforce Priority EOI pool. The stream replaced eight earlier OINP streams in 2026 and opened its EOI portal on August 4, 2026. It has pathways for job offers in all TEER categories and for self-employed physicians.

What it means for your move

The change rewards higher earners with Canadian tax records. Workers who have already reached $80,000 in one year gain points that may lift them above the cutoff in future invitation rounds. Candidates without that earnings history will find it relatively harder to compete.

The direction matches federal proposals. IRCC’s 2026 Express Entry consultation named high earnings as a temporary resident as one of the strongest predictors of newcomer success, and proposed points for high-wage occupations.

An Ontario nomination through an Express Entry-linked route adds 600 points to your Comprehensive Ranking System score. Base nominations lead to a separate PR application.

What to do now

  • Check your CRA Notices of Assessment for the past 5 years. If one shows $80,000 or more, make sure your EOI earnings details match it exactly.
  • You do not need to resubmit, but confirm your profile reflects the change after Ontario’s update.
  • If you are not yet registered, read our Ontario Workforce Priority guide for the job offer, language and education rules.
  • Compare other provinces in our PNP guide.
  • Talk to a licensed consultant (RCIC) if your income history is complicated, for example self-employment or multiple employers.

What happens next

Ontario has not published invitation rounds under the new stream on its updates page for this period. Watch for draws and further scoring changes. The 2027-2029 Levels Plan, due by November 1, 2026, will set next year’s national PNP target. Follow our Canada page and updates.
